Bettye Chumley Boyer, 86, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away August 30, 2017 in Bradenton.
Bettye was born in Ozona, Florida to William Chester and Thelma Revels Roberts on November 19, 1930. She graduated from Sarasota High School in 1947 and went on to attend Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, where she met her husband, fellow student and future artist, John Chumley. Bettye and John settled in Middletown, Virginia with their 4 young children in 1961 where John pursued a career as an artist and Bettye taught art in the Frederick County school system. In 1983 Bettye opened Shenandoah Fine Arts Gallery. After John’s death in 1984 she continued growing the business, showing Chumley prints along with the works of other local artists. Bettye married Charles “Chuck” Boyer of Stephens City, Virginia in 1994. Together Bettye and Chuck enjoyed ballroom dancing and extensive travel, eventually relocating to Longboat Key.
Bettye was preceded in death by her parents Chester and Thelma Roberts and her brother William A. Roberts.
Bettye is survived by her husband of 23 years, Chuck Boyer, her brother Wayne Roberts, son Wesley Chumley, daughter Kathy (Ken) Noffke, son Jeff (Susan) Chumley and daughter Bonnie (Len) Horst. Bettye leaves behind 11 adoring grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, VA at 11am Friday, October 20th, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the reception hall at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
