James Woodrow Hughes (Woody), age 93, died August 28, 2019 in Bradenton, Florida.
A Memorial Service & Celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 6th at 11:00 AM at Samoset Baptist Church, 3200 15th St. E., Bradenton, FL 34208, with Pastor Roland Davis officiating.
Woodrow was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Hughes, daughter Selena Hughes, and 7 brothers and sisters. Survivors include 5 sons: Daniel (Bonita), Gary (Joyce), Raymond (Brenda), Remer (Dolores), and Daryl (Karen); 8 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Woodrow served 5 years in the Navy during WWII, 1943 to 1948.
Woodrow was an active member and deacon of Samoset Baptist Church.
As most of you know, Woody played Church League softball and was instrumental in helping start and playing in the men’s softball league in Manatee County. He loved playing softball on the same team with his 5 sons, Woody started playing softball in the early '60s, continuing to play until he was 84. You would still see him at the fields watching some of his sons play.
After retiring from the Post Office as a Letter Carrier, he and Evelyn spent many years traveling the country in their motor home.
Woodrow was well-loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
