Joan A (Alderman) LarkinDecember 8, 1928 ~ January 23, 2018 (age 89)
JOAN ALDERMAN LARKIN, known affectionately as "Jody" of Bradenton, Florida, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2018.
She was born on December 8, 1928 in Plant City Florida, to the late Dorothy Burney Alderman and Chester Arlington Alderman. She attended Plant City High where she was a cheerleader and learned to love football. She was a graduate of Auburn University in 1951 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and was a "War Eagle" through and through.
Joan later attended University of South Florida and received her master teaching degree in Library Science and was a Media Specialist with Manatee County School Board for 30 years.
Joan married Thomas "Tom" J. Larkin in Bradenton, Florida on October 24, 1954. Tom owned and operated "Larkin Motors". They welcomed their daughter, Leigh Ann, in 1956 and their son Tommy in 1959.
She was a lifetime member of the Entre Nous Service Club; a lifetime member of the Jr. League of Manatee County; a 30 year member of the Bradenton Country Club; and a member of First United Methodist Church of Bradenton for over 50 years where she participated in the Anne Payne Circle and Altar Guild.
Joan loved spending time in Bradenton and at their summer home in Maggie Valley, North Carolina (with her family and friends). Joan moved to Sarasota from Bradenton in 2013 to be closer to her daughter and her family.
She is predeceased by her son, Thomas A. Larkin and is survived by her husband of 67 years, Thomas J. Larkin, of Bradenton; her brother, James Alderman of Bradenton and Gainesville; her daughter, Leigh Ann Webb and her husband Richard, of Sarasota; and her granddaughters, Shelby Webb and Whitney Webb. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who gave much to her family and the community and will be missed by many.
It was said of her: "her lovely southern charm, gentle demeanor and smile set her apart."
A memorial service will be held at the Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, 720 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton, Florida 34205 on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. Visitation will be one hour before the planned service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 603 11th Street West, Bradenton, Florida 34205, or to Tidewell Hospice at 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, Florida 34238.
