John Clements Crawford, 93, fell asleep in Jesus on November 13, 2018. He was born on May 24, 1925 in Oak Park, IL, the son of Fred and Mary Clements Crawford. John graduated from Lindblom High School in January 1943. He then enlisted in the Navy and entered Purdue University through the Navy’s V-12 NTU program to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was part of the 1st graduating class from Purdue’s Aeronautical Engineering School and was assigned to the Pensacola Naval Air Station as an Ensign. He played on the Purdue football team while at Purdue and was also a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. He left the Navy in 1946 and remained in the Naval Reserve until 1955.
John entered his work career with the Electro-Motive division of General Motors Corp. (“GM”) in 1947 and retired 46 years later as the General Sales Manager for the Delco Electronics Division of GM. While at the Electro-Motive Division he was part of the Dieselization program that replaced coal fired engines throughout the US rail system. While at Delco Electronics they began and expanded the computerization modules in the automotive industry.
John met Betty Jo Lewis in high school. They were married in 1949 and were blessed with 4 children. John and Betty Jo shared 52 years of marriage before her death in 2001. John then met Tina Rood (also widowed after 50 years of marriage) in 2002 at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bradenton. They married in 2005 and shared nearly 13 years together as man and wife. In addition to Tina Rood Crawford, John is survived by his children, Gary (Ann) Crawford, Sally (Doug) Hull, Rick (Sue) Crawford, and John (Kristen) Crawford, Jr; grandchildren, Jacky (Steve) Shenbaum, Molly (Graeme) Lauriston, Kelly Crawford, Sarah (Brandon) Brown, Laura Hull, Jenny (Matt) Haas, Katie Crawford, Sara Crawford, Jack Crawford, Will Crawford, and Michael Crawford; 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 stepdaughters, Chris Traylor, Ellen Lehfeldt and Anne Rood. John is preceded in death by his older brother, Robert Crawford and survived by his younger brother, William Crawford.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 24th at 11 am at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bradenton. A private family burial will be held at Parrish cemetery in Parrish, FL.
